Our Projects
Steller Sea Lion Monitoring
Over the past two decades, we have maintained long-term camera monitoring systems on major Steller sea lion rookeries across the region. These remote monitoring efforts provide a continuous record of population dynamics, demographic trends, and behavior of this endangered species. By analyzing imagery data collected over time, we aim to better understand changes in abundance, age structure, pup production, and site use patterns—critical indicators for assessing the recovery and conservation status of Steller sea lions.

Coastal haulout drone surveys
We conduct coastal drone surveys of true seal haulouts, including spotted and harbor seals, to estimate local abundance and monitor population trends. High-resolution aerial imagery is used to train and refine AI tools for automated detection, counting, and body size estimation of individual seals. This project advances non-invasive monitoring methods and supports data-driven management of coastal pinniped populations in a changing marine environment.

Stranding database support
We collaborate with regional partners to develop and maintain a comprehensive marine mammal stranding database that compiles records of live and dead strandings, oil spills, and marine debris interactions. The platform is designed to facilitate data sharing and public participation, supporting research, conservation planning, and rapid response to marine wildlife emergencies.

Fur Seal Rescue on Tyuleny Island
Each year, we conduct dedicated field efforts on Tyuleny Island to rescue northern fur seals entangled in marine debris such as plastic packing bands, net fragments, and other fishing gear. This ongoing conservation initiative combines direct intervention with systematic documentation of entanglement cases to assess the scale and sources of debris-related threats. The project contributes to reducing human impacts on fur seal populations and raises awareness about marine pollution in the North Pacific ecosystem.

From Kurils with Love
We produced the documentary From Kurils with Love, showcasing our conservation work across the remote Kuril Islands. The film highlights the region’s unique wildlife and the challenges it faces, aiming to raise public awareness about marine conservation, sustainable coexistence, and the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems in this biodiversity-rich archipelago.

Walrus research support
We collaborate with federal agencies and research partners to conduct field expeditions focused on Pacific walrus population dynamics and demographic parameters. This work supports conservation and management of a species that represents a critical subsistence resource for coastal communities in the region.
